March 25, 2006 – Buck Owens died on this day.  In  his sixty-year career, the singer had 21 number 1 hits on the Billboard  country music charts.
Owens and his band the Buckaroos pioneered a brand of country music  known as the Bakersfield sound.  It was a return to a more stripped-down  form of country, without the over-produced slickness that had  characterized a lot of the music coming out of Nashville in the late  50s.
